Overview

Lets Cut the Carnage

Did you know that………

In 2005, 399 people were killed on our roads. An estimated further 2,000 people left with serious injuries. This compares with the deaths of 374 people in 2004 and 335 in 2003.

The trend for 2006 is up on 2005, rather than achieving the 25% fall in road fatalities set in the Government’s National Road Safety Strategy. This means we are well on target to realising the deaths of in excess of another 400 people on our roads by the end of the year.

While recognising that there are more vehicles on our roads today than ever before, road deaths per head of population are far higher in Ireland in comparison to our neighbours such as the UK, Netherlands and Sweden.

What is the IIF doing about it?

IIF continues to lobby for road safety to be given greater political priority, and, in particular, that greater resources are dedicated to enforcement. (The other three “Es which are the cornerstones of successful road safety strategies are Engineering, Education and Evaluation).

IIF on behalf of its member insurance companies, is a major sponsor of the activities of the National Safety Authority (formerly known as the National Safety Council (NSC). The Authority implements education programmes, media campaigns, including hard hitting TV adverts, and public relations activities to influence public attitude and behaviour in relation to road safety. For further information about the NSA, see www.nsc.ie.

In addition, member companies on an individual basis carry out activities to cutting the carnage on our roads. Their activities range from supporting public awareness campaigns to training programmes to improve the driving skills of young/inexperienced drivers.

What can you do?

Every road user is responsible for his or her own behaviour and an improvement in driver behaviour is ultimately the solution to reducing our annual toll of deaths and serious injuries.

So please play your part in making our roads safer for everyone.
